After Tours

The last couple of years of Charles Martel’s (the word “martel” actually means “Hammer.”) life were spent consolidating his realm and getting his affairs in order (a concept that eluded many lesser leaders such as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Muhammad, Stalin).

Once again, in an uncommon manner, Martel worked to divide his rule equally between his two sons and assure that the brothers remain on good terms with one another (a concept that also eluded Muhammad).  In this also Martel was successful and atypical of history’s experience in this area.

            He named one of his sons, Pippin, after his own father.  This man was to husband his inheritance well and pass it on to his son, Charlemagne, both the experienced, well-trained, undefeated army along with the territory that Charlemagne’s grandfather had created.

            Most scholars believe the Battle of Tours, not commonly remembered today, was of a singular nature in world history.   Had Charles Martel not stopped the Muslim juggernaut at Tours all of Western Europe lay open to Islam’s jihad as only the Franks under Martel were strong enough to defeat the Mohammedans.

Edward Gibbon was to say of Charles Martel and the Battle of Tours, “the events that rescued our ancestors of Britain, and our neighbors of Gaul (France), from the civil and religious yoke of the Koran.”

            Without Charles “The Hammer” Martel Western Civilization may well have died at The Battle of Tours and there would have been no Shakespeare, no Mozart, no Newton and no Abraham Lincoln and you, my dear reader, may well have been a Muslim.

                                                                The Battle:

Finally after six days, on the 10^th (or11^th) of October, 732, Rahman felt that he couldn’t wait any longer and attacked the defensive line of the Franks.  The Muslims, their cavalry charge blunted by the battlefield’s incline, were overwhelmed by the disciplined ferocity of the Franks and later in the day the Franks captured and killed Rahman.  (Some sources maintain Rahman was not even there but had been recalled to North Africa).  Leaderless the Muslims retreated after suffering large losses. The battle was over by late afternoon.

After the Battle of Tours the Muslims were temporarily not a factor so Martel returned to gaining control over other areas of Central Europe.  If Martel fought an opponent whom he respected he would treat the vanquished enemy with magnanimity, a most unusual attitude for the Dark Ages. This did not apply to Muslims as Martel found little to respect with this Islam stuff.

            Another interesting aspect to Martel was that he did not incorporate religion into his battle plan as would his grandson Charlemagne.  The precedent to do so was already in place when the Roman Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity and moved the Cross to the head of his columns thereby misunderstanding the whole idea of Christianity.  Was this lack of God in Martel’s divisions an oversight on his part or did this truly exceptional human being merely not want to be a hypocrite?

         The Stirrup:

Some commentators rank the invention of the stirrup and its affect on mankind equal to that of the wheel and the printing press.  Both the printing press and the stirrup were invented in China with a prototype stirrup first appearing around 200 BC.  From there the idea made its way west arriving in Eastern Europe a thousand years later around the 8^th Century AD.  (Meanwhile India had come up with its own version).  It would also have been picked up by the Muslim jihadists in the Eastern Mediterranean about the same time.  But did Rahman and his troops at Tours have the technology?  The sources are unclear about this.  Given the outcome of the battle, i.e., the Muslims lost, it would appear that they lacked this critical piece of equipment.

            However, they may have had a rudimentary form of the stirrup but lacked the “full-foot,” rigid stirrup; without the full-footed version the Muslim warriors would not have stayed in the saddle to fight but dismounted after they had made their initial charge.

            Amazingly, the full-footed stirrup was invented by none other than Charles Martel!

            Charles Martel, this brilliant strategist and tactician, prior to the Battle of Tours had already decided to develop a cavalry capability for his army.  He was currently involved in setting up horse farms around his realm to build up the necessary supply of horses needed for an effective cavalry unit.  After the Battle of Tours Martel was to meet the Muslims twice more in combat, at Narbonne he again took the Muslims by surprise when he showed up with a fully effective heavy cavalry.  The Muslims were left speechless (and defeated again) that he could develop such an effective cavalry so soon after Tours, where he had none.

Supplies:

An army is only as good as its supply system.  In today’s U.S. Army it takes seventeen support troops for every one infantryman.

            The location of Tours was in the Franks’ backyard and as such they could remain in position indefinitely as the local population would have supported them.  Not so with the invaders.  The Muslims were under the gun (which had not been invented yet) and had to get this show on the road.  It is a prodigious logistical feat to effectively find enough daily food and fodder for 30,000/+ men and horses.

            The Muslim leader, Rahman, probably didn’t like what he saw at the battle site.  He was a successful general himself with mostly victories under his belt.  He probably understood what this hill’s incline and the woods at the crest meant to his attacking forces.  Perhaps he thought to himself, “I don’t know who is in charge of this outfit but he sure looks like he knows what he is doing.”

            The Muslim troops were probably a little more sanguine about the whole thing.  They understood the hill’s incline and many may have understood the problem with the woods at the top of the hill but these things were what Rahman was supposed to deal with as far as the troops were concerned.  After all they had been killing Christians all their life as had their fathers and their fathers and their fathers.  None of these guys had ever been defeated by Christians before so why should today be any different…..they were about to find out.

            Unlike Rahman, before the battle the Muslim troops probably didn’t wake up and smell the roses until they actually closed in hand-to-hand combat with the Franks and then each Muslim, in turn, all 30,000 plus, would have said to himself, “Holy Muhammad! Who are these guys?”

Terrain:

But Charles Martel was not going to permit “all else being equal.”  Martel had a lot of accurate information regarding these Muslims whereas the Muslims had almost no information regarding whom these Franks were or what they were about.

            Martel’s heavy infantry was undefeated after years of combat.  They were tough, confident but not cocky, disciplined and each man carried upwards of seventy pounds of weapons and armaments.  All Martel lacked was the proper battle site.  He found what he was looking for, indeed, more than he could have hoped for.

            The “Hammer” found a low hill featuring a long glacis incline running up to the hill’s crest.  At the crest was a wooded area with an undulating edge whereby the tree line would creep slightly down the hill before turning back up again towards the crest.  Martel positioned his troops in a defensive line and was able to incorporate these spits of trees into his defensive battle line.  These trees would tend to break up the attacking cavalry line and maneuver the attacker into smaller, disorganized clumps easier for his men to surround and hammer.

            Ironically, “The Hammer” had found the perfect terrain to set up his anvil.

            In addition, these woods would not permit the Muslims to either encircle nor to envelope Martel’s defensive line which is always a considerable advantage cavalry has over infantry and/or static defensive positions.

            Because of this superb tactical advantage established by Martel almost the entire advantage of cavalry verses infantry was eliminated.

            After charging up the hill the Muslim horses would be winded if not exhausted.  The trees would splinter the attack and Martel’s tough guys would cut them to pieces.  This was the plan and one would be hard pressed to find a more effective piece of generalship anywhere in history.

Martel moved the Franks into position around the 1^st of October.  The Muslims arrived around the 4^th and the two sides glared at one another for the next six days.

            The Battle of Tours in what is today southern France took place on Oct. 10, 732.  Some refer to the battle as the Battle of Poitiers some as Poitiers-Tours as the battle itself took place between these two towns.  The actual battle site has never been found. Some sources say the battle took place on Oct. 11.

The Forces:

The opposing forces at the battle were the Franks under Martel numbering some 30,000 infantrymen and the invading Muslim forces under the command of Abdur Rahman.  Information regarding the size of this Muslim force varies widely.  Some sources say the Muslim host was 80,000 strong.  Other sources say they numbered about the same as the Franks or slightly more, maybe 35,000.  A few sources maintain the Muslim force was a small reconnaissance-in-force sized operation.  Those who believe the latter do not place a number on this unit.

As a general rule troop number estimates regarding ancient warfare tend to be high.  It is unlikely the Muslim force was 80,000 strong.  Similarly, the smaller, unspecific number of a reconnaissance-in-force unit appears to be ill founded.  The Muslim forces were probably about the same size or somewhat larger than the Franks

            One thing everyone agrees on is the Muslim forces were a 100% cavalry and the Franks were 100% infantry.  This would give the Muslims a de facto two to one advantage over the Franks, all else being equal; such is the advantage of cavalry over infantry.

Charles Martel was born circa 687 AD, in what is now Belgium.  He was the illegitimate son of Pippin II of Herstal and upon his father’s death the father’s widow had Charles put in prison so as not to be a competitor for her own son’s inheritance.  Charles, however, escaped prison and took over as a leader of the Franks.  After many years of internecine conflict Charles emerged as the undisputed ruler of the Franks.  Throughout his life he resisted the title of King possibly as a result of his illegitimacy but, whatever the reason, a remarkable demonstration of humility for a political leader of any time or place.

            Martel was reputedly a tall, powerfully built man with the agility of a much smaller person.  He spent his entire life in combat and formed the Franks of Western Europe into a superb fighting machine.  He did retreat once in a battle early in his career because he recognized his forces were not quite ready for the opponent.  So, in mid contest, he sounded the retreat and returned later to defeat this foe once he had gotten his troops up to speed.  If this one instance can be called a defeat then it was the only one in his twenty-four year career.

            In the late 720’s Martel recognized the threat posed by Islamic forces south of Gaul (France) in the Iberian Peninsula.  He then took it upon himself to form the first all professional army in Europe since the collapse of the Roman Empire.  To pay for this he confiscated the means from the religious orders of Western Europe.  For a while he risked being excommunicated until the priests realized Martel’s army was the only thing standing in the way of the Islamic host and their own potential beheading.

            In his book, “Slavery, Terrorism & Islam” Dr. Peter Hammond lays out what happens in countries as the Muslim population increases:

• 2% or less. The Muslim population portrays an attitude of peaceful coexistence.
• 2% – 5%. Proselytizing begins among other ethnic minorities and disaffected groups. Jails and street gangs are targeted for conversion. The inherent criminality of Islam begins to attract those pre-deposed to crime.
• 5% and up. Muslims exercise an inordinate influence making demands of the host society to accommodate Muslim wants and sensibilities.
• 10% and up. Muslims have congregated in isolated pockets, lawlessness increases mostly with out-sized complaints about “Islamophobia”, etc. Tensions increase. More demands are made on the host society. Stonewalling police becomes endemic.
• 20% and up. Hair-trigger rioting, jihad units are formed, sporadic killings, churches, synagogues, temples are burned.
• 40% – widespread massacres, chronic terror attacks, rampant crime against the infidel hosts.
• 60% – unfettered persecution of nonbelievers, sporadic ethnic cleansing and genocide, Sharia law imposed and used as a cudgel on nonbelievers, the “jizya” or special infidel tax is imposed.
• 80% – daily intimidation and violent jihad, the State sides with the mobs, infidels are driven from the country. (At Partition Pakistan was 25% Hindu. Today it is less than 1%)
• 100% – the goal of Islam creating dar-es-Islam. Everyone is a Muslim the infidels have been slaughtered, forcibly converted or driven from the country.

One wonders why Muslim immigration is considered a good thing.

Only malaria and influenza have killed more human beings than Islam. It may be that the bubonic plague and smallpox have also killed more people than Islam but these pathogens have been eliminated as threats to humans. The plague has been brought under control but still exists while smallpox has been eliminated.  Estimates are that Islam has slaughtered 270 million people.

The working estimates for Islam’s body count are:

• 80 million Hindus
• 10 million Buddhists
• 60 million Christians
• 120 million Africans

These indigestible numbers do not include the Islamic slaughter of Jains, Sikhs, Taoists, Zoroastrians, Ba’hia, Jews, etc.  Additionally, Muslims have slaughtered one another by the tens of millions over the past 1400 years.

Those on the Left of the political spectrum have a delusional tolerance of Islam because they perceive certain affinities with the ideology.

• Lefties are, by definition, some shade of socialist and socialism is coerced theft by the State.  Islam is predicated on the principle of theft by conquest and extortion. 
•  Both Socialists and Muslims are statists having little regard or no respect for the individual, i.e., agree with group-think or else.
• In today’s world both socialists and Muslims consider the West and theU.S.in particular the font of all the world’s problems.  Muslims believe theU.S.is the Great Satan and socialists believe theU.S.made the Muslims angry.
• Socialists hate Christianity as do Muslims.
• Socialists seek to destroy the nuclear family; Muslims have succeeded in doing so. The weaker the nuclear family the better totalitarianism works.
• Socialism and Islam are both utopian constructs
• Socialists advocate for “free love” while Muslims prefer unlimited opportunities for rape.
•  Socialists wish to destroyIsraelas do Muslims.
•  Lefties consider themselves superior bipedal hominids; so do Muslims.
•  Socialists think the Crusades were an atrocity conducted byWestern Europe; Muslims agree.
•  Socialist seeks to pollute their own educational system, making the masses more manageable, Muslims have accomplished this already.

If the socialists in association with the Muslims are effective in destroying Western Civilization the Muslims will win and the socialists will be eaten. “Useful idiots,” indeed!
